Description of Clove Tree
The clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum) is an evergreen tree known for producing the aromatic flower buds commonly used as the spice cloves. It grows 8–12 meters tall, with smooth grey bark and dense, glossy green leaves that are oval and leathery in texture. The tree produces clusters of small, reddish flower buds that turn bright red as they mature—these are harvested and dried to form cloves.
History of the Clove Tree
The clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum) has one of the oldest and most fascinating histories in the world of spices. Native to the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) in Indonesia—also called the Spice Islands—cloves have been valued for more than 2,000 years. Ancient Chinese records from as early as 200 BCE mention cloves being used to freshen breath before speaking to the emperor.
By the 3rd century, cloves were traded throughout Asia, reaching India, the Middle East, and eventually Europe. Their high value made them a luxury item, often worth more than gold by weight.
In the 18th century, clove trees were secretly transported and planted in other tropical regions, such as Zanzibar, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka, breaking the monopoly. Zanzibar later became the world’s largest producer, a title it still holds alongside Indonesia and Madagascar.
Today, the clove tree remains both a cultural symbol and an important agricultural crop, valued for its culinary use, fragrance, and medicinal properties.
